Guest Post: Save Ohio Libraries

Cincinnati Women Bloggers is pleased to have Andrea, from Udandi and the Craft of Money guest posting today.  You can follow her on Twitter at @Udandi.

Library BooksWhen people hear I blog about crafts, personal finance and libraries they do not immediately see the connection between the three topics.  In short, I save money by using the library to get sewing books so I can make my own clothes and home decor items.

From books to web sites, I learn by collecting and sharing information. That is also what libraries do. While the Internet is a tool libraries use to help access information, it will not replace libraries. Libraries are a lifeline for all users: for those who want to learn and for those who seek a place of community. They have been
essential to education and economic recovery. When schools cuts libraries, they know their students will still have access to materials and resources through the public library. When people lose their jobs, they are directed to use the public library’s Internet access to search and apply employment. When the underemployed decide to go back to school, they come into the library researching educational grants and scholarships. When personal budgets are tight, families come to the library for storytimes and creative, educational programming. At a time when libraries are being used more than ever, we need to Save Ohio Libraries.

The news that Governor Ted Strickland’s budget proposal included cutting the Public Library Fund by 50% to balance the budget mobilized library users to contact their legislators to let them know the importance of libraries. At the time of this writing, the Ohio General Assembly has issued a statement in support of libraries. Now, we wait for budget approval and the fate of Ohio public libraries.

We never stop reading and learning and we never close libraries.

Blog of the Week: recycleD bin

Meet Jenny K, the cool University of Cincinnati Interior Design student who owns the blog recycleD bin. Jenny has found a great way to recycle plastic bags to make some very fun and practical container sets. Here’s what she has to say about her blog:

HEY THERE! I’M JENNY K – A FOURTH YEAR (SOON TO BE 5TH YEAR/SENIOR) INTERIOR DESIGN STUDENT AT UNIVERSITY OF CINCINNATI. I LOVE FOOD, MY FRIENDS, SUSTAINABLE LIVING, DESIGN, AND CINCINNATI OF COURSE!

LAST QUARTER IN MY FURNITURE DESIGN CLASS I MADE A PROTOTYPE OF THREE DIFFERENT SIZED CONTAINERS MADE ENTIRELY OUT OF PLASTIC GROCERY/SHOPPING BAGS. IT WAS REALLY WELL RECEIVED, AND SEVERAL PEOPLE HAVE SUGGESTED THAT I THINK ABOUT MAKING MORE AND SELLING THEM. IT’S STILL IN PROTOTYPE STAGE, BUT I AM IN THE PROCESS OF REFINING THE DESIGN AND GETTING THE WORD ABOUT ABOUT HOW COOL THEY ARE. EACH SET OF THREE CONTAINERS USES OVER 300 PLASTIC BAGS – 500 MORE SETS AND AN ENTIRE TON OF PLASTIC WOULD BE SAVED FROM THE LANDFILL!

SO. THIS SET OF DITTIES AND THOUGHTS IS MY PERSPECTIVE OF LIVING GREEN IN CLIFTON (IT’S HARD BUT DO-ABLE!) I’D LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU AND WHAT YOU THINK OF MY THOUGHTS AND MY DESIGN.

And, Jenny is selling these containers. Check out her blog for pricing. Let’s help her keep a ton of plastic bags out of the landfills!

She bakes an awesome cake too! Thanks for the CWB birthday cake Jenny!

CWB Birthday Cake

THANK YOU

CWB GroupLaura, Debba and I just want to thank everyone who was able to come out last night to celebrate Cincinnati Women Bloggers first year as well as all of you who have supported us over the course of the past year.

It’s been such an amazing journey filled with so many new friendships. I can’t even begin to put to words how much I’ve learned and grown from getting to know all of you.  Last year when we launched our blogroll consisted of less than 20 blogs. Today it stands at more than 120! It’s amazing.

We’ve got lots of exciting things planned for our second year and can’t wait share them with you. If you have ideas for topics you’d like to see presented on, please don’t hesitate to shoot them to us at CincinnatiWomenBloggers@gmail.com. Also, if you’ve just stumbled upon us and are a local blogger email us and let us know about your blog! We’d love to add you to the blogroll.

PS. If you missed last night’s event, you can check out the photos on Shannan’s Flickr stream and over on Bob’s.

Happy Birthday to Us!

A group photo from one of CWB's early meetings on the second floor of the Bean Haus. It's amazing how much we've grown in a year!

It’s hard to believe it’s been a year since we sat on the second floor of the Bean Haus and hoped that other women would show up to be part of an organization for women in social media in Cincinnati. Today, with 120 awesome women on the blog roll, we’re thrilled to celebrate our first birthday. And, in true Cincinnati Women Bloggers fashion, we’re throwing a party!

So, join us at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 17th at the Havana Martini Club at 441 Vine Street for our birthday bash! We’re not doing anything fancy, just socializing and having cake (and a few drinks) with our friends and supporters. Men are invited too! So, bring your friends, husbands, boyfriends, coworkers, girlfriends, sisters, parents, random person on the street etc.

Besides cake, Havana Martini Club will be providing drink specials like half-priced bottles of wine and $3 select draught beers. Nice!

We’ll see you there! Please RSVP for this event on our Eventbrite page. Of course we welcome people to show up the day of the event, but Havana Martini would appreciate a general head count for their planning purposes.

Blogs of the Week: Write Technology, My Wine Education

We're voting for Michelle! You should too!

We're voting for Michelle! You should too!

Instead of focusing on a single blog for the CWB Blog of the Week award, this week, we’re focusing on a blogger and the two sites that make her the Cincinnati Woman Blogger we know and love. Say hello to Michelle Lentz! Michelle is the owner of the popular wine blog My Wine Education and also owns the social media consulting firm Write Technology.

There’s a reason we’re saluting our dear friend and loyal CWB member this week. After all, it would be very easy to salute her EVERY week. BTW, did you hear her wine blog is now linked to Cincinnati.com? Seriously!

Back to the point. Michelle is a great blogger. She’s knowledgeable about all things social media and often speaks at CWB events to teach less experienced bloggers ways to refine their craft. She makes wine accessible. She’s great at pairing it with meals, and with people (as I learned when I got a bottle of this for Christmas.)

That’s why she deserves her dream job with Murphy-Goode Winery. Here’s what Michelle has to say about the gig on her blog:

Murphy-Goode Winery is offering a 6-month, $60,000 position to someone who wants to promote the winery via social media. They’ll even provide you with a rent-free home in Healdsburg. Seeing as how I’m a wine blogger and a social media consultant, it seems amazingly up my alley. I want this job. Really bad.

In order to get this job, I had to create a 1-minute video. I thought about embedding it below, but really, I want to drive you to the site to vote. You get a screen cap instead.

So many people seemed to just sit and talk about wine. I think wine is part of the job, but understanding social media and marketing is more important. So I tried to tell a story, and I used the Wizard of Oz to do it. Of course, it’s also an excuse to dress up like Dorothy.

So, powers that be at Murphy-Goode Winery, please accept this blog post as the Cincinnati Women Bloggers official and enthusiastic endorsement of Michelle Lentz for her dream job. We know that she’ll be your dream employee and bring to your business the enthusiasm for wine and expertise in social media she gives us every day.

Sincerely,

Laura Deaton Morarity, Shannan Boyer & Debba Haupert
